The Cold DM Strategy That Landed Me a Call with 3 Time Founder Yong-Soo Chung – Learn How!

This week we have 3 time founder and personal holding company expert Yong-Soo Chung on the podcast. But what you don’t know is I first met Yong-Soo prospecting clients in my last business, a digital content agency.

This week we have 3 time founder and personal holding company expert Yong-Soo Chung on the podcast.

From a humble start sleeping on an air mattress in his friend’s San Francisco apartment, to building what he calls a “lifestyle business on steroids”, Yong-Soo has transformed his hobbies into a staggering $6.5 million annual revenue business portfolio.

But what you don’t know is I first met Yong-Soo prospecting clients in my last business, a digital content agency.

At the time:

• He didn’t know I existed
• I had less than 500 followers on X/Twitter → He had +15k
• His inbox was already bombarded by cold DM’s from other agency owners

My odds of getting a response were slim to none.

However, I not only got a response but end up on a call with Yong-Soo within the week.

That call ultimately led to a long term friendship where we’ve helped each other out multiple times since.

So today I’m going to break down for you the exact cold DM methodology I used to build the relationship with Yong-Soo.

I originally got this framework from Sean Ferres’ “Client’s on Command DM” and I put some of my own tweaks on it.

You can use this to build any online relationship, whether that be for landing a new client or connecting with someone interesting.

The Context

So, here’s the scoop: Yong-Soo tweets about needing podcast community inspo.

My friend Carol tags me. I think, "Why not?" and shoot over a DM. But not your average, corny business DM.

I got an instant response!

The Breakdown

Here’s a breakdown of the strategy you can copy and paste to unlock similar responses from hard to access people:

  1. Message Like A Drunk Teenage Girl

    • Messages are little bite size chunks making it much easier to read & digest
    • Clearly written personally for them and could not have been copy- pasted
    • Looks completely spontaneous and unplanned, no ulterior motive
    • Language is more casual and informal

  2. Personalised Value First Approach

    • I created a bunch of generic authority resources and picked the relevant resources for each prospective client, but with one twist…
    • I recorded a personalised loom video breaking down how he could use and benefit from the resource
    • It’s a 1 time lift to produce the asset then a 5 min recording each time to make it feel mega personal

The Next Step: Getting On A Call

I asked him some questions on what he was focusing on to grow his content and then transitioned into the following:

Within a week we were on a call together and the rest is history.

Here’s why it worked:

  1. Made it easy to say yes via a low time commitment (10 mins)

  2. Established credibility by showing the success of an existing well known client

  3. Offered personalised solutions to achieve his goals (Increase downloads & monetise podcast)

  4. Disarm the ‘salesy feel’ by:

    1. Literally promised him not to make it a sales call

    2. Called out what was in it for me (Referrals, target market research & proving my system works)

In Summary

When it comes to DM’s… Don’t be another robot.

Take the time to personalise your message and provide value up front.

And create a unique, friendly vibe by messaging like a drunk teenage girl.

Trust me it works!
